It used to be the Motorcraft XL12 transfer case fluid but I'm thinking they phased that out. You could probably still get it though. I think Mercon LV is what is used now I believe. Not a 100% percent though on that.
I'll be using whatever synthetic ATF fluid I have on the shelf, which happens to be a leftover case of AMSOil. As long as it's a suitable substitute for Mercon LV it will work.
I used XL12 when I did mine at 31k. I'm at 52k plus now. I have plans to do it again at 60k miles. We'll see if the dealer still has it in the spring then. I'm curious what they'll say about it.
What fluid does ford recommend for transfer case on a 2011 f250? Anyone know the capacity?
When I did mine, the two quarts it calls for wasn't enough. I needed an additional amount, though not much, out of a 3rd quart. That was my experience.
It looks like the TC changed on the 2017+, does anyone know if Ford published something on the change interval/compatibility for MERCON LV in the gen 1 trucks?

Here's a previous thread on this very topic about XL12 and Mercon LV for transfer case.
