Any one know if you can replace the rear main on a 351w with 3 speed Auto Tranny without removing the engine? Any hints or should I just keep parking on my gravel overflow parking spot.
Here is the proceedure
Remove the Tranny and slid it back.
Remove flywheel and engine rear cover plate. Avoid scratching or damaging the oil seal surface.
Use an awl to punch a hole into the seal surface between the seal lip and block. Screw the threaded end of a Jet Plug Remover into the hole, and remove the seal.
Clean the oil seal recess in the cylinder block and main bearing cap.
This is odd, I must be doing something different!
I have done several of them by unbolting the motor mounts, raising the motor with a jack under the balancer pulley, lowering the oil pan, unbolting the oil pump and dropping it into the pan, removing the pan, unbolting and removing the rear main bearing cap and replacing the 2 piece seal.
I wasn't aware that the 85 351 had the 1 piece seal that required transmission removal to replace!
I have a 351 Winsor engine and its a two piece seal, mine also needs replacing.......but I'm going to let it go for awhile longer till next year...not wanting to tackle it yet.
