Does anyone know if I can change the bearing and seal on my Dana 24 input shaft (between trans and transfer case) without removing the whole transfer case from my truck? There is some play on the yolk front to back and I want to fix it before any catastrophic damage! Thanks for any help you can provide!
You'd have to remove the front nut and companion flange (which can be a real bear) and both front and rear bearing retainers on that input side but then you should have access to both of those bearings and seals.
Do you have a shop manual that describes the procedure? There are a few different Ford references that all have about the same information. Since the 4WD was introduced in 1959 one of the smaller references that can be handy is the one on the right in this ad. The 1959 Ford Service Forum No. 7 - Four Wheel Drive Operation and Service. It has a few pages on Transfer Case removal and tear down.
Thank you TA455HO! One of my main concerns is the pocket bearings (not 100% sure this has them) falling out of place during the process. Its looking like the transfer case may need to come out to avoid pocket bearing disaster?
Red,
Personally I'd drop the T-case so you can have a clear view of what you're up against. Due to the divorced case it's a fairly easy operation. Its a good time to replace the stock rubber mounting bushings as well. I believe you can still get a polyurethane kit for early broncos that will fit our trucks.
