Fuel Pump Driver Module..

Why did Ford have to use the FPDM, why do they need to vary the speed of the fuel pump. My 92' fuel pump just ran all the time at the same speed so i am trying to grasp what changed with the fuel delivery system 2007 and why we need to use an FPDM ?

After replacing mine and two fuel pumps, I wonder the same thing.
I'd like to just plumb an aftermarket external pump using a draw straw system from a diesel....
