I am swapping a 351 into my 96 that had a 302. The motor I bought did not come with a flywheel. The flywheel I bought for the same year is a 1/4 inch thicker. Will it work ok with the hydraulic clutch?
The old flywheel had been faced but I doubt a 1/4 in. I did have a very small shim on it. The new part number from Power Torque is PHT50-738-100816.The old 302 number is E8TR-AA. Thanks for the help.
I'll take a wild guess here. The flywheel may be thicker, but what matters is the distance from the bellhousing mounting face to the surface of the flywheel. Try installing the old flywheel on the crank and measure this distance. Replace with the new flywheel and recheck. Are the measurements close? If so, you should be good to go.
By the way, do you have a part # for that new flywheel? 351W will have different balance than the 302.
The 5.0 and 5.8 flywheel are quite different visually. But, the clutch release assembly is the same between the two, and IIRC is the same for the Rangers and Explorers.
If you are concerned it's not right, look up the measurements on it to compare. Things aren't supposed to be misboxed, but it happens all the time.

Just checked and the new flywheel sits back a 1/4 inch further on the engine. I do not have the ford part number for the Windsor.
A 1993 flywheel would work for my existing clutch. After that Ford used different fingers on the clutch to meet the wider flywheel on the 351W. I am going to go ahead and put a new clutch in that matches my new flywheel.
Thanks to those who replied and a big thanks to the tech support guy at Power Torque! Also, thanks to the one who put that tech support number on the bottom of the box.
