So got all the family stuff done. Figured I would change the plugs in my 08 5.4. First plug screwed out good but the bottom part stayed. How do I get it out? Stuck bad momma needs the truck tomorrow night to go to work. Please if someone has some insight please share it with me.
For best results you'll need the Lisle tool kit and compressed air with a long wand.
There are threads here, if you search around. Tough job, but not impossible. If you have access to someone getting to Hartford CT, you're welcome to borrow my Lisle tool. Mail back.
Thank you very much for the offer. Just ordered one it will be here Friday. Momma just gonna have to walk the 30 miles. Lol just kidding I'll take her and pick her up at 2:30 in the am. Life is good. Never broke one off before. Must have been lucky. Heard of it happening though. Would never seize work so this doesnt happen in the future or is it to hot at the top of the cylinder? Although I have the tool now I'm good to go.
It's a issue with carbon getting between the spark plug cover and the wall of the head. The only good way to prevent it is to change plugs sooner than the recommended interval. That being said you are already going to have issues with more plugs breaking off before you complete the job. The Lysle tool works well.
FWIW, some claim if you break the plugs loose and then pour penetrating oil in the spark plug hole it will help get the plugs out in one piece. My experience is that as soon as you break the plug loose with the socket the damage has already been done. Good luck with the tool. It's time consuming to get them out but is doable.
I was betting.if I get one out without breaking I'm going to be lucky. Thats just the way my life goes. I wouldnt have it any other way. Thanks for your guys help. Merry Christmas.
When I had a truck with the Triton motor I was so scared that the plugs might break that I bought the Lisle tool before I even attempted a spark plug change (at less than 50k miles), it turns out that if you buy the tool first, you actually don't need it........
After I sold the truck I also sold the tool.
You should replace the original 2 piece plugs with quality 1 piece plugs & at least remove, clean & refit every 20k or so. This helps prevent carbon build up on the portion in the combustion chamber.
What brand is the one piece plug? I didnt even hear of the tool until yesturday after it was to late. I stopped pulling them after the first one so maybe after I get the tool in the mail friday the rest will come right out. One can hope right?
MotorCraft, or nothing. When I did the job, I put high temp anti-seize on plug thread (careful not to get on electrode), and I assembled all electrical connections and coil packs with dielectric grease.
It's also a good time to clean air intake pipes, and while you're at it give air filter some love. Take your time, and keep it clean.
so these will work for the 08 5.4? Just want to check before I switch what I have out.
its all good figured it out you were absolutely right. Just have to go farther away then the local parts store but should be worth it thank you very much.

I've had very good luck with this, usually removes the plugs intact. Last one I did, I only had one broken one (I also have the Lisle tool for removal).
If you read through the various threads about removal, you'll find a number of different options and opinions.
Last one I did was on an Explorer - since I had the room, I decided to take a chance on one of the more aggressive methods...
Install OTC tool to cinch things together
Install sleeve over tool
Attach impact wrench to sleeve (sleeve is 1/2 in drive)
Short burst on impact
Pulled all 8 with no issues, no broken plugs - in about 15 minutes. Was a bit hesitant to use an impact, but dang it, it worked!
