My wife's 2018 edge makes this awful noise when backing up. It did it a little bit last year in winter and only in reverse and only the intial time when it first moved and it was cold. It does not seem to happen after it has been driven a bit, unless it sits more than say 6hrs. Had the brakes checked & pads had no concerning wear, damage or misalignments. Then disappeared as warmer temperatures hit.
Well it is turning colder , again, and this noise has returned with increased intensity, ( the neighbors dogs think their being invaded), and only after the intial few brake applications.
No we hadn't tried to back the car into the garage and see if it does it going forward. Thats a bit scary for my wife to attempt.
Has others out there experienced this loud barking/groaning??
what about "Glazed" brake pads... ?? or overheated pads.??
both can cause this.
Not sure on "over heated" , we don't tow anything, shucks there is no hitch to tow with. Also the emergency brake is electric, pretty hard to accidently set it. But my wife has pretty unique talents??
As for glazing ,that holds possibilities, we had in for oil change yesterday and had the rear brakes checked . They reported that there was nothing unusual at all. No goofy wear pattern , no misalignment, etc etc. I don't think time allowed for a deep investigation, like taking things completely apart. Since it only does it when cold & stops within say 50 feet, they couldn't replicate it.

sure points to an issue with the pads... but to inspect for glaze or overheat.. pads must be removed... ( front and rear )
glazed can be block sanded away..
but overheated is toast... ( replacement only )....
a person does not need to "TOW" to overheat brake pads......aka riding the brakes or several hard stops within a half hour...
