Old school timing cover

I bought an old school timing cover with fuel pump provisions. First off the seal has to go in from the inside. I assume the spring towards the block???
i believe I already installed it wrong and already installed the cover. It’s still on the stand and easy to change. Will I need a new pan gasket or just timing cover gaskets and seal?
the other issue is that this is a 1994 EFI block with dowels but the old school cover isn’t drilled for dowels. What to do about that?
i want this right before I install the motor.

Are you talking about the front main seal? It's been a while since I installed mine, but I think that gets pressed in from the front.

On my old cover, the two lower holes were oversized, so I think they could have fitted over the dowels. But as someone else said, it's no big deal to drill them out if you have to. I would dry-fit the cover first to see if it will fit.

If you disturb the oil pan gasket by removing the front cover after having already installed it, you will need to replace that part that you damaged. Fel-Pro's front cover gasket kit usually comes with new corner pieces that you can use to replace the parts that you broke when removing the cover. But if the engine is still on the stand, I would just replace the whole pan gasket.

yes the front seal. It is a pre 1979 cover there for the seal goes in from the inside and has no outer flange. Pre 79 had no dowels. Bummed because this is a brand new expensive 1 piece rubber pan gasket. Never even had oil in the motor yet.
i guess I’ll order a new pan gasket and timing cover gasket and seal.

The 1 piece gasket is reuseable
