351W, front cover ?

I have a 1986 f-150 with a 351 H.O, four barrel carb engine. Recently it started leaking oil from the front of the engine and it appears to be from the front cover/timing cover. What I need to know is can the front cover gasket/seal be replaced without replacing the oil pan gasket. My Haynes manual says that you have to drop the oil pan to replace the front cover gasket, but looking at the parts I got from the parts store to fix this problem I don't see how the oil pan and front cover gaskets would seal, or interlock together to create a seal.

What some people do is cut a piece of the oil pan gasket that sits under the cover, clue it to the cover then carefully slide the cover back on. Do a search on how to install camshaft or something to that effect, the same question comes up when someone wants to install a cam without dropping the oil pan. Good luck

If you go buy a timing chain gasket kit from the parts store it will have two small pieces for the front edge of the oil pan. These pieces fit the front part of the oil pan which is exposed once you remove the cover. Just cut the old gasket like mentioned and place the new pieces on and you should be fine. You will also get a new rubber seal for the round part of the cover, a new crank shaft seal and water pump gaskets as well in the kit. The one piece oil pan gasket is a seperate piece if you need it.

I have never done this on a motor with the rubber one piece seal, only the cork oil pan gaskets. If you have the one piece seal it should be okay to use again as long as it has not been torn up.
