Anyone had experiences with replacing stock shocks?
I do have a leveling kit with 33" all terrains, and they are LT. I know they give a stiffer ride, so stiffer shocks may not be the answer. Looking for a better rid, but I do tow lightly like a boat or utility trailer on occasion, so I don't want anything that is to comfy and it squats horribly. Over the counter parts stores is usually the Monroe sensitrac around here. Anyone have any suggestions?
I assume you are referring to the rear shocks as the front is a strut, as far as ride there are many options depending on the type of ride you want, the shocks themselves will not have any affect on whether your truck squats or not as that would be your rear springs
My recommendation is that you DONT get an OE replacement shock. The factory shocks are pretty squishy. If you upgrade to a higher performance shock you'll get a better ride. They are typically a bit more stiff, but helps you feel more in control and not like it's a rough ride.
Bilstein is what I have and recommend but there are a lot of options. Bilstein 5100 are a common recommendation around here.
I had some Gabriel ultras on my 2006 Expedition and they rode really nice.
They were very compliant over sharp bumps, but not squishy over the dips. Hard to describe but very good on the road. Very smooth but very controlled while towing and not “soft”
As a comparison, I drive a 2018 ram at work and it has about 15,000 (hard) miles on it. My ram made my expedition feel like it just rode terrible. Every bump hurt. Then I put the Gabriel ultras on my expedition, and it made my ram feel like it rode like crap. The difference was dramatic.
Never used gabriel before that, but it made me a fan.
I put Gabriel on my 2002 F150 and had similar experience to meborder.... They sold them locally at the Auto Parts Store and were on sale that weekend....
I was steering away from oe emplacements, and I did mean struts on the front, as well as shocks in the back.
Come to find out my rough ride & vibration may be in part to a failing carrier. If you spin each of the rear tires it makes a popping sound as it spins. I had the gears and side bearings swapped out to accommodate 33" tires a year ago, and it is limited slip. Should have done a whole rebuild at the same time. Stupid me.
