I had ME and then upgraded to XP when the update came out. Big improvement and a much more stable platform. Since I had a Dell system and used the Dell upgrade it was very easy and painless. I do not run XP Pro.
My wife has a generic box of parts type PC that had ME on it. A couple weeks ago i installed a new video card and ME. I had problems with the video card but ME installed easily. It was just the plain old upgrade version. It checks to make sure you have a previous version of Windoze installed first before it will install. XP really is a lot more stable than ME ever was. I agree about switching the interface to classic mode. It's much better

Don't know which way to go. $300 is pretty steep.
Ouch. I got Windows XP Professional and Office XP for $15 each through my school bookstore. And, since it's mass corporate license, there's no product activation nonsense
I'm still running windows 98SE, I have more than one PC and a laptop, I had ME and it suuuuuuuucked. I looked at XP but the product activation thing stopped me, Are they really going to charge you extra to put it on more than one PC? even though its yours! I have to check that out first.
I'm setting up Linux on a PC but I'm not ready to teach my wife linux yet.
My Sis has XP Home, and I'd be willing to bet she's spent a week on the phone with tech's, who charge her, and still she has bugs in the system. Worm's or Virus who knows, but there seems to be no way of Re-initilazation of the Hard drive, then reloading the software without some phone help. What a messed up P.O.S. in my opinion.
Pop-up's advertising pop-up killers come up all the time. No help from Compaq/HP, and very little sympathy. What a mess. I like my old windows 98.
I run XP Home... love it
I had ME... didnt care much for it
I have 98 and 98 SE also.
All full verions except for the ME update
You can install XP over ME Im pretty sure, I think I recall doing it to my fiancee's computer.
I bought a Dell with XP home on it and I love it. It doesn't lock up like 98 constantly did and I have never heard anything good about ME.
The one thing about XP is that it has a lot of programs that run in the background, eating up usable RAM, but there's an easy fix for that without having to go through and shut down each individual program.
Go to www.download.com and type in Freeram and look for FreeRamXP Pro. It's a free download and frees up RAM from programs you aren't using and really speeds up your computer. I found that I had been only having about 79 megs of usable RAM before I installed FreeRamXP Pro and I set it to free 180 megs and presto... my 'puter runs great now and I always have available ram. I plan to eventually upgrade to 512 RAM instead of the 256k that I have now, but until then, this works great.
98SE is just as stable as XP ever will be. ME is a pig and takes up 75%+ of you system resources compared to the 30% that 98SE uses. I like 2000 myself (2000 is NOT ME). Me was windows 98 with the windows 2000 interface talk about sucky.

98SE was really nice - I was stuck with ME for the longest time - what a piece. I've been using PCs since windows 3.1 was out, and I like XP the best. I did get rid of all the idiot bloatware that came with it, but when you get right down to it, XP is a great OS. And, like I said, I got my copy of XP Pro for $15 - can't argue with that!
I love XP, once I got it set up the way I wanted and got rid of all the garbage that came with it (came preinstalled on the new HP). Am I the only one here that likes the new look over the classic look?
I don't know much about all this but this pos Gateway came with ME and it has been a problematic clunker since it was new. I am getting my new custom made computer tomorrow and it will have XP. Up until lately the guru preferred 98 but he says it is being outdated and in a year or so it won't accept alot of the new stuff. It was his computer or a Dell and I went with the locally made one even though it is a bit more money just because I can got look him in the eye and talk to a human on the phone if needed with out some endless phone menu. $799 for a 128 mg. without monitor. 2 year in house warranty. I think 98 was the last version that could be copied off. The XP requires a licensing and registration for each installation to my understanding.
