Had no trouble yet til tonight. Drove truck abt a week ago. Always started fine. Tonight DEAD....no lights no nothin. Jumped it and let it idle for 10 min then drove a few miles. Little eyes on batteries still red after drive, restarted twice fine. Left a charger on it tonight on 2amp. Will those batteries recover??? No doors left open, no lights left on and key was pulled. Even if lights were on should have shut them off automatically????
2019 6.7 with 9800 miles on it parked in heated building. Ideas on what killed batteries and are they shot if eye still red? Thanks in advance.
I am of the opinion that once a starting battery is completely dead, it is never the same again. It has been irreversibly damaged. Sure, it might get you by for awhile and you might think everything is hunky-dory, but it will fail at some point and it will be at the worst possible time. Like, turning off your engine so you can hear the McDonalds person through the speaker in the drive-through lane and then it won't restart and there are ten cars behind you.
If it were me, I would get new batteries (maybe covered under warranty?) for peace of mind alone.
But, you need to find the cause so you don't ruin new batteries. Hopefully just a simple reason why they were dead.
2 amps would take a week to charge two batteries, use a much higher amp charger and then if it starts, take it to an auto parts store that tests batteries for free. Be sure they disconnect one battery and test them one at a time.
