Coolant leak

I have a leak and I'm not sure exactly where. It highest point of coolant is almost the top of the radiator. The very top of the radiator is plastic and then bonded into metal. Is this a common place for these to leak? The coolant level in the Degas bottle is that the almost at the same level where it looks there's the seam. Any advise?

Yes, that's a common place given when we wrench on these trucks your right knee typically goes right there on top of that plastic tank and puts your weight on it. There is a rubber gasket between the plastic tank and aluminum core that develops the leak. My wife's Excursion did this and I looked at several options...have it repaired, buy a new same unit with plastic tank at local parts store, or buy an all aluminum unit that's all welded up with no rubber gaskets. I chose the all aluminum unit route and even ordered another for my F350 even though it wasn't leaking, but figured I didn't want to wait until it did. These all aluminum units can be had from about $200-$800 and I bought the $200 units. It has been several years since and no leaks.

Check the plastic nipple where the upper radiator hose connects. Fan blows it everywhere!

Nope. Dry as a bone. But it's right below there where it's getting wet. I believe it's coming apart at the seams. I'll figure out a way to pressure check it with it in the truck.

Some coolants will leave a whiteish residue when dried indicating a leak in that area. A pressure test with the level below the suspected leak should show some ‘tiny bubbles’ if sprayed with a squirt bottle containing a small amount of Joy mixed in water. Sort of similar to checking a hole in a tire. Be patient as tiny leaks take time and will produce tiny bubbles.

Found it. Cracked at the very bottom of the big nipple on top. I got home a bit ago and it was leaking. Flexed the top hose and it puked coolant. Just ordered an all aluminum radiator from Performance Radiators #2171. Thanks for your help guys.

I looked at those as we have a supply house right near and I chose to not get that unit as it still has the gasket at the top and bottom tanks...which failed on the Excursion for aforementioned reasons. The units I purchased have no gasket seals and are one piece instead of three, and 100% welded up. I was able to find them cheaper than the Performance Radiator units also...

What is the name of the unit you bought? I'm calling them right now to confirm and cancel my order.

Just called and spoke with Brandon. He said 100% aluminum no gaskets and all welded. We will see.

That's what he told me too, and when I got to the actual unit in the local shop it is not. Here is what an an one piece unit looks like that's 100% welded up. They are a little over $200 on Ebay or Amazon.

Ensure that the OTW cooler is integrated into the radiator and the row/core capacity is equal to or better than OEM. There are radiators available for purchase that DO NOT have the OTW cooler in them and even more that have different cooling properties due to variations in row/core sizes.

OTW - Oil To Water

Basically the transmission cooler that is in the bottom of the radiator. The very early SD trucks did not have the OTW cooler, but were retro-fit with them once Ford figured out what was going on. I was on Rock Auto looking at the radiators and noticed at least one choice did NOT have the OTW cooler integrated into the radiator.

Look at the bottom of the radiator in the picture above. See the 2 inside screw bungs on each side...that's where your transmission lines attach that go into the OTW (Oil To Water) cooler.

Ok. Mine is a 1999.5. Born in June of 99. It has the small transmission cooler in between the radiator and condenser. I think I found one on Ebay. It's all welded. And less than the one I purchased today. But it hasn't shipped yet. I will cancel that one and get the one on ebay. But I got to do something quick. Working tomorrow and it's about to come apart. Losing quit a bit of coolant.
