I am tired of reading, and getting confused. Wheels, I currently have the old split rims on this 1972 F350 dully with front disk brakes. I need new wheels and tires, can someone please tell me what size I can buy and put on the truck, without having issues?
Sorry, but I can't help you with your question. There are a lot of people on here that may be able to assist you though. Just wanted to give you thread a bump and offer some advice.
If you provide more information, they may be able to respond. What do you have on the truck now? What are you looking for?
Good luck.
Sorry I don't have definitive answers either, but in many cases the 16" sizes will replace the 16.5" sizes without brake interference. But that depends on the brakes.
I'm not familiar with the front discs on your '72, but because it's a 350 I "assume" that they are the large dual piston caliper type? Here's where pictures will come in handy. With 10 posts now I think you should be able to post up images directly?
There are 16" dually wheels too, I'm pretty sure. With 17" wheels though you should not have any clearance issues with any Ford brake setup that I can imagine.
Wheels are dually-specific, but I don't know the specifications regarding width (usually skinny) or offset/backspacing dimensions. Typical might be a 6, or 7 inch wide wheel, but maybe even 8's fit with certain setups. If you're just replacing the old ones though and keeping roughly the same size tires, then stick with the same width for simplicity.
You might be able to see the numbers stamped into the backs of the wheels showing diameter and width. Or a tire shop should be able to determine.
Since I've never worked on split rims (had them, but never did anything about them) I'm only guessing they were mostly 16.5's on our type of truck. Pretty sure they came in other diameters, but were not usually found on the typical '72 Ford.
That's another area that those more familiar will have to confirm though.
I have a 1972 1 ton camper special with 16" split rim wheels. Front disc dual piston calipers.
Later model one piece 16" rims should work. Checked with a friend who has a 95 1 ton dually. His rims fit my 72.
check redneck trailer sales. They have 16 inch coined dually wheels for $100 each. Even though it is for a trailer it will work / fit. Put a set on my 71 F-350 so I could run radials and eliminate the widow makers.
I am doing the same thing although with a 1971 F350. Recently found 7 wheels at two different junkyards. The first said they had a lot and when they looked they only had 2. Embarrassed they called around and found another location that had five. If I remember correctly they said they had another set. I cleaned a couple of the wheels up (where does the time go?) and discovered one that looks as if it is a Rockwell wheel and I can see numbers on it. Hope this helps.
I believe the coined wheels were on 73 to 78 Ford F350. Somewhere I read that it was a very short number of years. Both junkyards were familiar with the coined lugnut concept.
