I have a 2001 f150,5.4 that I've owned 18 years. Hardly driven, with 130,000 miles. I recently had to add a gallon of antifreeze and awhile after that, smelled antifreeze from exhaust. Does this mean blown head gasket or possibly something else? No milky color to oil. Thanks
I had some problems with antifreeze on a 2001 .4 years ago... Can be intake manifold or head gasket or head... If you don't have a real external leak, just some internal, I would try a sealer... It worked for me..
BARS LEAK COPPER 1109 is what I used. About $12 at the auto store... You get a 12 or 16 oz bottle.. Take off the upper radiator hose at one end and pour the bottle into the hose and reinstall... Add coolant till full, the drive around for 20 minutes till thermostat is open and hot... Shut off and let it set over night. When the motor is off, the cylinders have no pressure and the radiator is at 14 psi so the sealer will be pushed into the problem area... Next day, same thing. Unless you have a huge leak, it should seal in 1-2 days.
20 years ago they had the gooey black crud and the aluminum flakes as sealer.....caused lots of problems.... They have come along way since then. I did not have any plugging of the heater core or settling in the block, etc from using the COPPER 1109.... had real good luck.... have used it in 3-4 different trucks with minor internal usage of coolant.

I just had some crazy symptoms as well with my 2003 f150. Turns out I have a blown head gasket and I'm getting a new engine soon. Have your coolant tested for hydrocarbons to see if you have a head gasket leak. You can buy the kit at the auto parts store. Next have your trucks intake manifold tested. You could have a leaking seal causing coolant to burn off. These were know to leak before they swapped to a composite type on the 03 model years. Analyze inside the truck on startup and listen to see if you hear a swooshing sound in dash from your heater core. If so air is in the system which in my case was exhaust gas getting into the system. Also after you drive the truck check the degas bottle fluid level becuase it shouldn't fluctuate much in the bottle. Check to see if you have white smoke on startup.
