I am in need of a new block for my B3000, that's the 3.0L Vulcan.
There's a few options available on craigslist right now, but I'd like some input before committing to anything.
Then there's this '94 sable motor. It's the right block for sure, but I understand I need to use ranger head gaskets and my existing intake plenum as the thermostats are on opposite sides. Also I ran that VIN and it was totaled in a front end collision in '06, doesn't exactly inspire confidence. https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/w...016673859.html
Push comes to shove I'll just call up the local salvage yards and find something a little closer to mine.
Everyone I talk to just says to give 'er the old 5.0 swap. But I just want my little truck back!
Thanks.
You can use any 3.0 vulcan up to 2008, but the 2000+ Ranger/B3000 motors will be the most direct swap.. earlier Ranger/B3 motors have a different intake and wiring and everything external of the longblock will be different on the car engines.
I am prepared to strip the sable engine down to the block and reuse everything off of my existing engine. I am wondering if there's anything I should be concerned about if I go with a block so much older.
So that 2011 is a duratec then.
The '94 motor won't make as much power as the one you had but should otherwise be fine, and yeah the '11 is going to be a Duratec which is a complete no go.
Is the block/head any different? I was under the impression that the main power bump for these engines over the years came from the intake and exhaust, which I will need to salvage off my old engine anyway.
I'll probably call the guy about it today.
I'm not aware of any block or head differences. At one time we had a 94 and an 04 Ranger here both with the 3.0 and there was a significant difference in power, I know the intakes were different but it felt to me like there was enough difference that there had to be more too it than just the intake.
I chose a reasonably priced engine from a 2006 Taurus, 86k miles. Everything went smoothly, stripped it down, swapped in ranger head gaskets. I had to press in and weld on a ranger oil pump dip tube, salvaging mine wasn't an option, the failed rod mangled it pretty well.
I left the taurus timing cover in place, part number nearly identical (revision B, ranger (2001) is A) and didn't see a reason to change it out.
Some say the taurus cam is different, maybe but I didn't want to use that from my blown engine.
The only modification I had to make was to the flexplate as the hole pattern is different. Two holes required relocation as the pattern is asymetrical. It's a shame it didn't occur to me to take pictures, but I was freezing my *** off the entire time.
Maybe it's because I haven't driven it in so many months, but it seems this engine idles way smoother than the old engine.
