My F350 has always been loud when it comes to truck noises... I know, it's a truck. 02 model, 270K miles, 4WD, not a dually.
I went to back up yesterday and the truck made a growling noise with a bit of vibration. I checked the hubs to make sure they weren't locked in and they weren't. Went forward - no noise, backed up - growling again. I checked the u joints last year while changing one out they seemed good then and I haven't put that many miles on it since.
Anybody experienced this before? Where should I begin to look? How to test? etc...
I would check easy stuff first,u-joints on drive lines & front axle shafts, front unit wheel bearings, brakes, might lift all four wheels off the ground & start spin testing everything.
Thanks for replying. I should have mentioned that the sound and vibration seems to be coming from the rear end, possibly brakes or differential. I haven't had an opportunity to look at it yet but there are a lot of folks with mileage like mine and some much higher hanging out around here so I thought someone has some experience to share.
The 'vibration' almost seems like having the front hubs locked in on pavement and trying to make a sharp turn. It's not that, I've checked and it seems to be not related to the front end.
I'll report back when I get the time to check on what you suggested.

If transmission is an auto low fluid will make this noise and vibration. Not all the time, just sometimes.
