'92 explorer 4x4 auto hubs & automatic transmission
There was a front end roar/vibration that started at about 60mph got worse up to 65mph and then smoothed out above 70mph.
I adjusted the wheel bearings and the noise was gone.
Then, I put it into 4WD and started backing up and the where three loud jarring bangs from the front of the truck.
since then the roar and vibration is back.
Any suggestions to the cause and fix for this?
Thanks.
Ragnar
Are the auto hubs engaging in 4x4? Are the hubs disengaging in 2H? That roar/vibration could be something in the front drive train. Check the u-joints on the front axles and driveline.
the hubs do engage and disengage.
the u-joints are good, one question though as I think of more things about the situation.
my explorer sits on a 2.5 in Rancho suspension lift done before I bought the truck.
Would a lift that small on an Explorer change the pinion angle, or drive shaft length enough to affect the ride?
And would that effect be like what I'm experiencing.
the vibration/noise quiets when I turn to the right and gets slightly louder when I turn left.
any thoughts and comments are appreciated
I have a 2000 Explorer, AWD and I have he exact problem you describe....a loud roaring (but very little or no vibration) in the front end that starts about 60 or so, just like yours. I just put brand new goodyear tires on it too.
Everything else on mine is factory...I would love to hear comments on this problem....I just got this vehicle and so I haven't taken it to a shop yet for estimates, ideas, etc.
I finally figured out the problem. First I stopped and listened to my wife who has been telling me all along that it was the front wheel bearings. Then I changed the front wheel bearings. It worked. I did make one mistake, in reading the directions in the repair manual I torqued the wheel nut to 16 ft. lbs. when it read 16 in. lbs The bearings being too tight makes an even worse racket than the first noise. Hope that helps
