The large terminal on the alternator goes to the solinoid terminal where the bat+ lead is. That is the output of the alt. An easy check is to measure the fld terminal on the alt. If there is no voltage there, the alt will not charge.

I don't think that is connected on mine, I'll go check it out now. My truck is a wiring nightmare. Thanks.
At the field terminal, you may see around 11.5 volts. If you have zero volts, the regulator is bad or it is not getting a signal to turn on . +12 to the S terminal will energize it. If you have voltage at the field but the battery doesn't go to 13.5 or higher, the alternator is bad. Check at a fast idle.
My alternator and battery are good, just had them both tested. When removing my alternator, I noticed there is nothing connected to the stator terminal on it.
What is that wire for??????? Also, where would the other end of it be located?
If your instrument cluster has an ammeter, there is nothing connected to the stator terminal on the alternator. If you have an idiot light instead, the stator terminal on the alternator connects to the STA on the regulator.
