So GM has moved back to sheet metal mounted side mirrors on their trucks and now on their SUVs and no one is talking about this... There was a reason ALL manufactures moved away from this setup like 25yrs ago. It really bugs me for a number of reasons which I would love to discuss;
1 stress cracking around the bolt holes (anyone remember this). I currently have 3 old trucks, all three are broken out at the mounts. This is really concerning to me on the HD trucks, those mirrors have to weigh 20lbs each!
2 fills the natural void area at the front triangle of the doors. GM chose to just put a plastic filler panel there and now the void looks so empty and out of place...
3 symmetry! Body lines and overall flow of the vehicle is thrown out of wack by hanging a big bracket off of the sheet metal at least IMO.
Now I will admit GMC did a little better job with their 1500 at least styling it around the body line. What just make me cringe is both 2500s. Those mirrors come off of the door and literally go UP back to the position of the triangle... That is where the mirror is, WHY could they have not just mounted the mirror there where it should go!! That is a move I just do not understand and if for no other reason than that I could never own one.
