Question K&N FIPK vs Aircharger?

Okay gang...long story short, I am back here again.

Anyway...I was peeping around for a FIPK for my WRX and stumbled upon this: http://knfilters.com/images/aircharger/63-1066.jpg

Now that setup seems to replace the entire intake tract from throttle bodies to filter VS the FIPK that just replaces everything after the meter.

Do you guys think the Aircharger setup would make any significant power gains over the FIPK I have currently (I found a few dyno charts showing an average gain of about 6-8rwhp with the FIPK)? If so, my FIPK and tubing will go on sale shortly...

I am getting a custom tune for my truck around December so I can potentially test both out and keep the Aircharger if it is a better setup.

I can't honestly see how this would add anything more than 1-2 hp over the FIPK. By moving the spot where it splits the air into the TB back, it can't really add much if anything. It still splits it, which still disrupts the airflow.

That is sort of what I was thinking also...only real difference I see is that the Aircharger uses a solid tube instead of the stock one with the baffles and has a heat shield that will keep the filter cooler.

I can get the Aircharger at cost so I may just try them both out on a dyno...shouldn't take much time to test each.

Lex...by the way I am ordering my 200A alternator next week, then comes my fan install. I already have the fans and controller so there is another 8rwhp!

It will be interesting to see the results of the dyno with those two. Let me know how your fan install goes. Curious to see how worth it it is.

What all do you have that needs to be powered by the 200A alt? I can't remember. Even with all the accesories I've got, (gauges, amp..) I still can't see the need for it except at idle.

I have the same electric fan setup on my Z71 that is going on the F-150. The Z has a 34" wide one core radiator w/ a 160* thermo. The F-150 runs a 4 core copper brass, 180* thermo, and that nice aluminum Flow Kooler water pump. Flex-A-Lite VSC fan controller and Camaro/Firebird LS1 fans.

They cool great. I have had those fans through two Texas summers and they kept me cool. They are good for about 7rwhp (about 10hp at the flywheel) over a NON locked up clutch but when it is LOCKED the difference is huge. I'd say then closer to 15-20rwhp, very noticable difference.

Throttle response down low is greatly improved, the A/C cools better, and I picked up a bit of MPG too. That fan controller is a very trick piece...it turns the fans on at about 50% power when demanded by the thermostat or when you turn on the A/C. It temps rise so does the fan speed. If temps decrease fan speed goes down. Running at 50% power my fans draw about 10-12A and about 20-22A at 100% speed. I am unsure of what the A/C compressor draws.

The 200A is for: fans, MSD 6AL, PPI amp, Pioneer Premier HU, headlights, A/C, and blower fan...all on at once. If I didn't run the underdrive pulley set the 130A would be fine with the overdrive alt pulley...but since I am going to be hitting the charging system a bit more I'd like the extra room. You are right mainly about the extra amps at idle.

Don't you have a 160A alt also? I'd say you should be fine with that if you toss on the overdrive alt pulley and install electric fans.

Yeah, my 160amp should be enough... I'm actually contemplating gutting the A/C system off my truck. It's just added weight, drags HP away when on, and is just one extra thing to break.... I had it fully charged, and replaced everything but the hi press line, but I rarely used it this past summer. It gets pretty hot up here in VA, but I still mainly used the "free A/C", except for the times I would run in the heat of the day, and then drive home. The A/C felt especially good then!!!!

A/C is dead weight, but man it gets hard-core hot in Texas so I gotta have it. My reed valve in it ticking and is going to go at some point here. I rebuilt the rest of the A/C system (liquid line, high & low pressure lines, evap core, dryer, condensor, and all O-rings) myself about a year ago. I saved about $600 doing that!

My custom tune is going to rock! I am sticking the truck on a SuperFlow dyno w/ a wideband A/F tune...I hope for 200rwhp! It is getting tuned in San Antonio also.
