It depends on what you want it to look like. Back in 99 I bought oak boards from a local saw mill. In 2016 I put on a new bed and repainted the truck. My oak boards, despite 4 costs of varnish were turning black. Two of the boards were split badly at the ends. So I bought pressure treated yellow pine at Lowe's. The boards Ford used were yellow pine. They are 6.5" X .75" the exact size you need. Then I painted the boards meadow green to match my truck as they were painted in the factory.

Some guys use ash, hickory, old barn boards, or exotic tropical wood.

I used black walnut and five coats of Tung oil. I sold the truck in 1 day of putting it at the end of our driveway with a sign on it. I had redone the truck from the frame up. With. 5.0 Ford and a 5 speed trans. Two guys were really interested and I ended up getting $1500 more than I was asking. The only comment was the buyer said his wife saw the bed and knew it was a good well done truck and he should buy it.
My good luck.

Two buyers at the same time is what we all hope for...like at auction and all you need is 2 after the same item. I bet that walnut was neat, I just don't know but figured I use oak.

I’ll try to find a pic of it. The problem with oak is it turns black it not sealed completely and correctly. Good luck with it.

Thanks. The boards were painted with oil base paint and I think it is a perfect match to the body paint.

I used hickory for mine....but I had access to rough sawn board from a tree on our property. As has already been said. Making sure they are completely sealed is a must. I too used pure tung oil.

Find a local saw mill if possible, make sure the boards have had ample time to dry and are not "green". I used Red Oak that sat in the attic for about 10 years, Pecan stain, eight coats of spar varnish on the visible areas. The bottom, sides, and ends were painted black with two coats of oil based paint.

The pic's on here have some good looking bed floors...hope the one we ae doing look as good as these. Went to local lumber company and having some boards cut. When I get them the only thing left will be how to finish them. Seal them under side and ends with paint sounds like a good idea then stain and top coat the top side???

I used oak sealed with Cetol in my 49 F47. Looks great but I remain concerned about the possibility of black staining due to water seeping into the wood. When I was finished an architect friend of mine said that if I was so worried about water getting in I should have considered engineered flooring hardwood. Just an idea.

I would be concerned for your architect friend. Engineered hardwood flooring is not waterproof. It's made from hardwood plywood with a finished thick veneer on the top surface. It's more stable than solid hardwood, meaning it's less prone to shrinkage and gaps, expansion and contraction, etc. It doesn't hold up to water/plumbing leaks or your Christmas tree tipping over, I can promise you that. It certainly could never be used in an exterior environment.
