Seems like the FX4 is just a couple skid plates and a sticker basically?
I am looking at XL trucks and trying to gauge what it REALLY important.
I only use 4x4 here and there, usually when I am pulling a heavy cattle trailer out in a field and get into some soft stuff, which is only about 6 times a year, and even at that, I don't need the 4x4 EVERY time I am playing cowboy
As long as I have the dial on the dash and dont have to get out to engage the 4x4, I am good. Thats my main requirement.
i dont have the FX4 package but i do that the shift on the fly 4x4 and electronic locking rear. even with the stock tires i have been able to get out of the mud pits while hunting.
The FX4 includes other things; check the Ford site.
However, I cannot tell you if those other things are worthwhile; you'll have to decide that for yourself.
I specifically chose to not get the FX4 package when I ordered my truck. It added weight that I didn't think was necessary. You'll get the sticker (+10 HP right there), different shocks, downhill descent and skid plates. The skid plates can be ordered separately. The downhill descent feature can be DIY installed if you really want it. The shocks aren't anything to get excited about.

its bedside decals, skid plates and a button. That's all.
“Rancho shock upgrade and FX4 decal, an electronically locking 3.73 differential, Hill Descent Control, and skid plates for the transfer case and fuel tank”.
The first thing I did when I got the new truck home was to take off the FX4 decals

I have the electronically locking differential on my non-FX4 truck. The OEM shocks (Rancho branded or not) are rather lousy. One of mine leaked within 5,000 miles and the dealer wouldn't warranty it. I replaced all four shocks with the real Rancho 9000XL shocks and have been satisfied with the upgrade.
I use to think the FX4 option was a waist of money. I recently had a chance to use that little button on the dash, it's a modern day version of Granny Gear for an Automatic, like crawl mode, $400 well spent.

Oh really? Im not a student of it, but you're the first person ive read actually use it. Interesting. I guess its a real saver of your brakes if youre going down a long hill off-road.

When I need to go that slow, I use 4Lo. That won't work in every situation, but so far so good. I would rather use the transmission/engine to keep the speed down than the brakes.

It does use the brakes. The engine/transmission in 4Hi can only go so slow in 1st gear. The brakes are used to get the speed lower than that.

The "Rancho Branded Shocks" were deleted, there was no difference in shocks back then except the white paint and the sticker. These were dropped long ago, all FX4 and non equipped trucks use the same shocks.
