Quick 4x4 question.....

Thanks all! My 19 F350 dually lariat has the shift on the fly capability with 4x4. I have the dial on the dash for 4x2 , 4H and 4L. If I want to use the 4H all I do is shift the **** correct?? I don’t need to do anything with the hub locks on the front end? From what I read , they are in AUtO mode , all the way counter clockwise. Manual mode is all the way clock wise correct?? If I have the dial inside the cab, why would I ever need to change the Hubs manually? Thanks !!

The dial on the hub allows you to manually lock them. This can come in handy when they don’t lock automatically due to a vacuum hose or seal failure.

More concise and accurate words were never said.

on my 1999 super duty, despite the vacuum lines being sound, the auto hubs no longer work reliably. I leave them turned in manual in the winter and am good to go.

makes me happy that my 2019 will still be functional, if less convenient, in 20 years.

Perfect! So as long as the dial is working fine I don’t need to do anything with the manual hubs on the front wheels then? Thanks !

I don't use my 4x4 much so once every 5-6 months I'll lock the hubs for a day. And I plan to pull the hubs to clean and lube every couple of years to keep things from drying out.

sounds like a good idea! What I was asking though, is if I use the dial to engage and disengage 4x4 that’s all I need to do to use 4x4??!!? I don’t need to turn the dial AND get out to lock hubs etc. and when I turn dial back to 4x2 I don’t need to get out and do anything with the hubs. Thanks !

Correct, but if the vacuum line to the hub fails or the seals in the hub fail you will need to get out and lock the hubs! Your hubs are either vacuum operated, hub in auto position, or manually operated, hub in locked position.

Thank you so much !!! I’m in southern CA so I hardly ever use 4x4 but it’s great to know that if I get in a bind I can just engage with the ****. And if that ever fails I have a back up system!

If the vacuum lines or seals fail will it alert me on my info screen or will it just feel like it’s not in 4x4 etc??

No alert. You’ll just not get any help from the front axle. Only one hub has to fail to disable the front end.

the vacuum failed on my 2011 F350 a few years ago trying to go up a snowy driveway - got the wrench symbol and a “check 4x4” (or something like that) message as my wheels were spinning.
