Hi all. I am new to the chapter but lurking around the site for almost a couple of years. I have a 78 Bronco Custom and live in Greensboro, NC. I have a few basic things like replacing hub seals, proportioning valve, checking on a couple of leaks, etc.that I would like to tend to. There are plenty of mechanics in the area but I would like to find someone who knows our vehicles instead of someone who would just replace everything until they got it right. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
@JEKL , I was hoping one of active members might have been local to you. However, doesn't look to be the case (or they aren't checking the main board). Is it just maintenance you are needing or is there any other work you are looking to get done?
Benz, right now the vehicle runs great so it is just some basic maintenance so maybe I don't need such an expert. I would just like to know of a knowledgeable place for the items I mentioned as anything more serious down the road. When I was big into the Datsun/Nissan Z cars I had a local mechanic that I would always go to. Would like to have that same comfort with the Bronco if possible.
Is there any 4x4 shops in the area and if so maybe have them do some thing easy like maybe oil & filter and check all the other levels (front & rear diffs, transfer case, transmission) or a tune up just to get a feel for them.
I don't know how the dealer is but I have a Dodge as my DD and they have also work on the wife's Subaru. They want to see my 81 F100 and may have them do an oil change so I don't have to deal with the old oil.
We also have a garage we have used for tires and inspections, they even took my F100 in as a walk in for alignment almost at closing time.
I have seen older cars & trucks in the shop so I would also trust them to do any work on my cars & trucks.
Good luck

The Z Shop primarily does Nissan and Toyota products. Someone I know recommended a local mechanic that does basic auto work. I think I am going to take your advice and see how things go with changing the proportioning valve and go from there. Thanks for the tip.
I'm very fortunate to have found a good "old school" mechanic that knows & understands older vehicles. But he's in Benson NC which is more than an hour away from Greensboro!
Hi Cracker289, could you post that mechanic's details? I'm in the same boat, I have an old F-250 that needs a bunch of work, and have had trouble finding someone . . .

I must have missed the notification that you replied. Thank you for the information. I'd be interested in knowing as well. An hour isn't unreasonable for a quality mechanic on an old car.
JEKL - welcome to the the FTE forum and NC chapter (have you thought about joining?) i'm not familiar with any mechanics in your neck of the woods, but i can tell you there is a ton of helpful guys, gals, and information on here. it takes some digging, but more than likely, someone has had the same issue as you on the same vehicle. if you've got space and tools, with a little homework, you might be able to tackle yourself. keep asking around - you'll find someone.
JWAGON and JEKL my mechanic is an old school guy with a dirty shop and a yard that looks like a junkyard. In fact that was how I met him, I thought it WAS a junkyard so I pulled in to see if he had any old 14 inch rims for a Ford car When I found out he was a mechanic, it was perfect timing because I had just had a falling out with my previous mechanic after 17 years, so I was looking for somebody new. He has done a lot for me on my old 69 F-100; driveshaft replacement, transmission replacement, dang I can't even remember what all. His name is Larry McNeil, phone 919-946-2314. The address would be 15000 Raleigh Road, Benson NC 27504. If you know the area, he's directly across 301 from the South Johnston High School ball field. If you talk to him mention my name! (John Morales)
This is Larry's brother Raymond (I couldn't find any pics of Larry). They used to campaign this car locally 10-15 years ago, Raymond as the driver and Larry as the crew chief. Their younger brother Darryl manages an Autozone down in Dunn. The shop doubles as their hangout place, you can usually find Raymond dozing off in a chair, Larry working on a customers car, and Darryl tinkering with his own stuff!
