Haven't posted in a while. Truck has been running good until yesterday..
sounds funny but what's the first think you'd think of if your truck started starting faster?
Normally about a 2 second turn over then start consistently.
since yesterday afternoon every crank up has been almost immediately upon turn over.
It has also started running rough on take off.
Had to go to work today so haven't done anything and my Bluetooth reader went so I ordered a new one.
This sounds interesting. Old heavy trucks with 100% mechanical injector systems were like that once they were running for the day. All you had to do was turn it 'til the next piston went TDC and they would take it from there.
Suddenly starting quicker and a rough take off, my guess is oil or fuel leaking into a cylinder(s) while it's off. Bad o-ring or injector perhaps, maybe turbo seal. Pay attention to the exhaust and see if there's any smoke on start up or take off and note what color it is.
Well guys, she died on me. I only live a few miles from work so I been creeping back and fourth. Been busy on 12 hr shifts so haven't checked it out.
coming home it gradually lost power and got louder and rougher running then eventually wouldn't go and was about to die.
No smoke, oil level good, fuel filter change every oil change. 1/4 tank of fuel. Maybe fuel pick up?
Icp maybe? High pressure pump, Idk it will be a couple days before I can dig into it. Will post back. Any guesses appreciated.

Yup start there, you need fuel anyway add 5 gallons, prime it 2-3x, and see if it starts...
Yep, that's my plan, pour a 5 gallon can of fuel in and hope for the best.
its just the weird fast start that has my brain thinking it's something else. Air in the fuel system can cause it to fire almost as soon as you turn the key?
Not related but I recommend you stop wasting money on fuel filters every oil change.
Oil changes are 5k miles, fuel filter 15k miles. I wouldn’t stretch the oil but you can stretch the fuel longer, unless you are running motor oil for fuel or veggie or some nonsense.
Poured 5 gal of fuel in last night after work. Primed a few times and it started right up. But, still have a miss. let it warm up and it never smoothed out. While looking under the hood with a flashlight I unplugged the icp and it got worse, Really rough idle.
my new Bluetooth reader should be here Monday then I can see the oil pressure. Seems like the next thing to check. Any ideas?

How the oil level?? Google Hutch and Harpoon mods. Keep the fuel level ABOVE 1/4 tank until you take care of the pick up foot and do the mods.
It's possible you could have more than one problem here. If it starts and runs with more fuel in the tank, that very well could be the pickup foot that fell off. I put a little stainless hose clamp on mine when I pulled my sending unit to clean the screens. I noticed right away it was not very difficult at all to slip that thing on and off the fitting just hanging on by itself and could spot the potential for trouble. I would fill it up all the way and see if you can start to notice the pattern before committing yourself to dropping the fuel tank.
The rough idle and running could be a lot of things so you need some clues. Download ForScan onto a laptop and use the Bluetooth dongle to pull up the stored PCM codes and report back. If that doesn't shed light on anything I would suspect a fuel pressure issue since the engine doesn't have a sensor for that. It boils down to hooking up a mechanical gauge to see what it is doing, or throwing a little money at it replacing fuel pumps and pressure regulators hoping it will fix something. Not exactly how a pro would go about it but sometimes you can grock what is going on well enough to make a informed guess.

The old mechanical 5.9 Cummins motors were like that. I used to drive a nice old 92 Ram and that motor would light off almost instantly even dead cold. No electronic motor in a big or small truck I have ever driven has ever started that fast.
To me it sounds like what others are saying. The pickup came off. The running rough and missing before it died would have been air in the fuel system. The miss now after putting more fuel in might be an injector that is sticking since it didn't have fuel going to it for a bit. Those are my thoughts. Hopefully it's something easy. I could also be completely wrong.
Thanks for the replys. Got a new Bluetooth reader in today but truck would not start, so could read h pop. Got under and put my hand on the fuel pump while grandson turned on key. I felt a click like a solenoid but that was it. Went and drained some fuel from the bowl. Turned the key on and only felt solenoid again. Got a piece of tube and put on bowl drain to a bottle opened and turn the key on and nothing went into bottle.
am I thinking right that fuel should spray out the drain when open with the key on?

Yes, I left the drain open one, forgot to close it, Primed it 3x after filter change and the truck still started and ran with the drain open.
Sounds like the pump is dead. Clay at Riff Raff has the Bosch pump.

Yes, because the fuel pump is supposed to prime the system for 20 seconds when the key is rolled on. I would take the cap off the fuel bowl and confirm if it's empty or not, but sure sounds that way. If the pump is bad they are not expensive. I've seen them for as cheap as $100 online but Riff-raff or CNC Fab are good shops to buy from. Some fiddling around with a test light and multimeter down at the pump might help. If you can see battery voltage for that 20 second window on the pump power terminals while somebody else turns the key on that would suggest to me the pump is bad if it isn't coming on.
