hey guys/gals
got a question. I have a 17 F250, having a hard time seeing at night backing the truck up, I have the XLT with small screen for the camera. my question is basically I want to add 2 small LED bars to the rear of the truck. I want them to come on when I shift in reverse plus I want a toggle switch in the cab where I can turn these on just because I want to. I live in a rural area and there are times when this switch would come in handy.
has any body done something like this. or am I crazy to even consider it?
Very easy to do. Especially if you have the towing package. Tap into the reverse wire in the tow harness. USE a relay. This protects your factory wiring. Run hot wire directly to battery. Wire off tow harness will trip relay activating rear lights you installed. Easy.
I plan to wire a small driving light up to one of the upfitter switches this winter. Can’t have too much light backing up, and having it to hook up trailers in the dark is also a big plus.
Well the trailer is already on a relay circuit and a upfit switch is already a relay circuit..... So adding a relay to either one is a relay to a relay.
I bought a pair of LED work lights from Northern Tool. Mounted them to holes already on the outside of the receiver and wired to an upfitter. Easy-Peasy and right now you can do it for less than 20 bux.
I didn’t try to wire them to the backup circuit. Easy enough to turn them on whenever I need them, and honestly that’s not really that often. I do have to be careful though not to leave them on when driving forward as that would not be nice to folks behind and I don’t care to pay that ticket...

I bought the kit from zroadz. Came with the mounting brackets and two lights. I wired it to an upfitter switch, but it did come with a harness and switch incase you don't have the upfitters. They are super bright and make backing up a breeze. Also they do not wash out the rear camera.
Ahhh I see what you are saying. But I stand by what I said.
I would still use a relay for the reverse circuit if you tap into the tow harness. Whether it’s on a relay or not. This protects your factory wiring and doesn’t interfere with any trailer you may hook up.
I have to agree, an $6 relay is REALLY cheap insurance when adding cheap LED lights. You can even get SPDT relays with an external fuse. Fuses are another great idea!
