I have a 2002 f250 7.3 l turbo diesel before by 4 and it's been having loose steering now when I drive at 60 miles an hour and 70 be I will hit a bump in the road and it will jerk and go into the other lane
You need to put the key to accessory and have someone move a the steering wheel rapidly left and right you will most likely see the problem when your lying under the truck. Next time I do my front end I’m rebuilding the entire thing at once this go around I did it part by part...well that’s better I felt but still not all the way there. Now that I only have the front leafs left my truck drives like a car.
Loose steering is caused by worn parts, could be steering box, tie rods, etc. Does it get death wobble at all? Track bar bushings could also be worn. Like started above, easiest way to find loose tie rods or a sloppy box is to have someone wiggle the steering wheel back and forth with the tires on the ground while you lay under there and look at them all. You may only see a little bit of play in each one, but a little here and there adds up to allot at the steering wheel. Hope this helps ya some.
As mentioned have another body rock the steering wheel while you are looking at all of the connection joints of the steering linkage. Easier to have the engine running so the power steering is on.
I grab the joints with my hand. Sometimes you cant see the slop but you can feel it.
Dont see anything lose? Remove the shocks and actuate them by hand. The shaft should extend under pressure when removed. If they don't the gas charge is gone and they are shot. Rancho 9000s are the best. Set them to 3 or 4 and go. If you do go Rancho 9000s remove the adjusters and pack with grease so they dont freeze up a year later.
Dont rule out tire pressure a bad tire or a hung up caliper. Thes Big Burley Manly Trucks can not tolerate the slightest tiny little worn out part without taking a right turn over a shadow in the road.
