Hello all, I have a 95 f150 with a 4.9 in it. I have researched quite a bit and cannot find one consistent answer. On my stock exhaust system, does it have 2 cats, or 1 cat and one resonator, or something else? If so which is which?
Thank you in advance
I notice you said "had", have you removed or switched out your collector and cat? Did it affect your o2 sensor or throw any codes?
I said had/has, meaning that when I worked on the exhaust system I left the cat as it was and put new pipe and muffler on it. Gotta have the collector as it is, nothing else to do there, as it is just a big can.
you should have 2 "cats" 1--pre, 1--post, then muffler, the 2nd one "of the cat system", also has the ceramic honeycomb in it to catch more pollutants, the first one misses
hi-lited in blue circle--pre cat
hi-lited in red circle--post cat
Sorry for the late reply, I just saw this response! I greatly appreciate the explanation but I have another question. If I were to cut a hole and weld a pipe with a flap on it in between the 2 cats, so I can have it bypass the rest of the cat and muffler when I want but I can also have it travel through all of them when I want. Will this mess with any sensors and throw an engine light?

It will mess with the inspection for your truck, if you live in a state that requires the vehicle to be inspected.
no, sir it wont, they make them, in electric or manual pull wire
Just going with what I know. Here in N C it is not allowed. All the emissions parts that were on the truck when it was built must be on it, they don't have to work, on pre 96 vehicles, but they do have to be there, and a cutout in front of the cat is not allowed. Behind the cat, maybe. If the op is lucky and lives where there is no inspection, it would be ok for him. If he lives where there is inspection, maybe he should check the laws there.
Just recently on Januray 1st of 2020, emission inspections dont exist where I live now! ahaha. Thanks for that link, I will definitely check it out. I'm pretty handy with welding and metalworking and enjoy building things myself, but the switch is a nice perk for the price and it might be worth just buying it.
Another question, I can go measure tommorow but do you guys happen to know if the Mr. Gasket exhaust cutout 5424 is an exact fit or will I have to step down the size of the original pipe?

Why bother putting an exhaust cutout between the pre and post catalytic converters? What are you hoping to accomplish?

I too want to get rid of anything that I can that might restrict the exhaust. I get my vehicles inspected at the same place for the past twenty years, a friends shop. He will not pass any vehicle that does not meet the requirements, no exception to anyone. My truck does not have to be emission tested, but all of the emission parts must be on the vehicle and APPEAR TO BE WORKING. Cutouts before the cat would definitely be a failure point. Having said that, my cat has a large hole punched thru the core, and the collector/first cat is as empty as my wallet. The Truck runs good, is quiet, and I am happy with it as is. I also can't see why a cutout between cats would be wanted. Just to make noise I guess.
Hunt and pluck is something anyone that uses the internet should be able to do for themselves. I can find almost any answer to almost any question on the net, for my self, with out asking others to do it. You probably can also.
I have checked the laws, and my vehicle is 25 years old so I can modify my exhaust, so long as I have at least one cat and am not also I want to do the cutout just purely for fun. When I'm messing around in a field with my buddies, i'll open her up. When I am driving to school or just running errands, I'll close her and it will be nice a quiet. What I plan on doing is not touch my first cat, I'll just get rid of the second cat and replace it with a straight pipe and put the cutout in that, and not touch my muffler. I'm not sure how it sound so I plan on making nice and clean cuts for my second cat and clamp on the straight pipe, and if I don't like it I will put the cat back on and figure something else to do. I haven't messed around with exhaust systems much so I'm really just learning as I go. I really appreciate the responses.
