The time has come to replace a U-joint in my 2-piece driveshaft, and I want to go ahead and do all three at once. I know Spicer is the brand to use, but there appear to be gobs of different variations that all apparently fit our trucks.
According to Spicer's site, the 5-178x (based on the 1350) should fit in all three locations on the driveshaft. Are these the correct ones? Moog 232 seems to be the same part, but seems to be a product to avoid, though I've never had issues with Moog products on other vehicles.
The 3 u joints are all the same, with grease fittings, so that's an easy answer. I used the 10 dollar apiece kind on my truck, it doesn't get run hard. Make sure that you mark the alignment of the drive shaft before you take it apart, the two pieces are balanced together and must be reassembled the same way. There is no alignment spline on the center slip joint.
PS-- do the hanger bearing as well, you will have the driveshaft out anyway. Take it with you to get the new part, there are many variations and they all look the same in the parts book.
I do work the truck, so I definitely want something that can tolerate the abuse. My alignment marks should still be there since I've had the carrier bearing replaced a year or so ago with a part from Ford.
I forgot to mention that the driveshaft itself is out of an '89 F350.

Sounds like you got it under control, just get the heavy duty parts for that particular truck and you should be good for another 10 years.
There were no needle bearings left. When I first swapped in this driveshaft after the transmission swap, I just did a visual check and play test of the u-joints and added some grease. No caps ever came off. Oh well, the situation will be resolved shortly.
Also, the Spicer 5-178x will indeed fit; I went to O'Reilly's and placed them on top of one another and side by side to compare lengths and bearing cap diameter.
They didn't have the third U-joint at the store, so they're having it delivered at 1500 today, so I'm about to hop in the Durango and go grab it. I've managed to get the other two in and the drive shaft back together in one piece.

Did you get the parking brake anomaly taken care of?

I did. I installed a stopper that prevents the release handle from binding up the way it did; it's working perfectly now!

I went with Spicer since that's what O'Reilly has, but the Durango is getting to be due for u-joints too, so I may run Moogs on it and then just compare the results. It's good to know that Moog is still a sold option!
