5.0 Flowmaster Super 50 Update

I Bought my 2015 5.0 used with an obnoxious flowmaster 40 series muffler with no resonator.
I decided to go with replacing the muffler with one of their quietest, the super 50.
I will say it’s better, but not quite what I hoped for. The engine sounds great, but still a little too loud, and I want a bit of pipes, not this much though.
The drone is what’s really getting to me more than anything.
Break out the wallet again i guess! Just trying to figure out if i should get a different brand, or add a resonator to my existing setup?
I’m not trying to bash flowmaster, just trying to give an honest update/opinion. I’m leaning adding a resonator to my existing setup. I bought the stainless muff and it’s only a couple of months old.

I went to the same thing and I don't like those Dronemaster noise amplifiers, there is virtually no difference between any of them except size and they are completely empty besides a welded in diverter down the middle. If you want an actual muffler look at the Magnaflow performance series, it's a straight through design but the case contains damping material so it actually does cut down sound levels just like a firearm silencer. And 2 other points, the bigger the exhaust tube the more it will drone and muffler position has a big impact on in-cab sound level and tone, moving it just a foot forwards or backwords has a noticable effect.

You could try and find a factory resonator - probably some cheap ones on craigslist for prople who went aftermarket. Muffler shop should be able to weld in for cheap.

The last time I had flowmaster on anything was about 15 years ago. Last truck had Borla S-type cat back and I was very happy with it. No drone and still looked new when I traded it in after multiple salty New England winters.

Expect to spend about a grand though on a Borla setup.

Technically the 70 series is the quietest one they offer...at any rate I had the same experience, tried the super 50 and it was not quiet at all. But, prior to that I had tried two different Jones SI/DO mufflers (magnaflow copies) sans resonator and they were also very loud, so maybe the resonator really affects the sound volume that much.

Do you have 3" pipe going into the muffler? If so you could try this: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/pte-h3844/overview/

I used one of these cut down to one spiral and welded into the pipe just ahead of the muffler. Brought the sound level down to just about the perfect volume for me and did not affect gas mileage at all.

edit: eh I already posted this in the other thread, ah well

There are many threads on this and the F150forum site about this subject. I have a 70 series on my 5.0 with an auger welded in from Speedway in the pipe in front of it and found it right for me. I also ended up with two smaller ones right before the chrome tips out the back. I pop riveted them in. Good Luck

Ok, thanks for the replies.

Maybe i’ll look into adding a resonator and have that auger thrown in in front of it i’m thinking.

Call Spintech. They will dial you in. The circular design of their baffles pretty much eliminates all the drone you are experiencing.

Update-

I ordered the-

Patriot Exhaust H3844 $20

It’s an auger and 11” long. I decided to try and add it myself before taking it to a muffler shop to cut and weld it in or adding a resonator. I had 14” to work with at my outlet so I pounded it in 13”.

Boom! Super happy. It still has a nice rumble at idle and low speeds up to 3k rpm’s. Probably about half the db’s I had before. WOT it sounds ok, kinda miss the roar, sounds muffled, oh well.
Drone- almost nonexistent. About 1800 rpms was the worst, no more. I hear just enough to know it’s there, but probably a 75% reduction.

Thanks for the suggestions, done chasing the exhaust note. Sounds like a healthy V8, not a street rod now.

WA_PSD.. that's the Patriot I used too with the 70 series muffler. It did the same for me as it did for you.You will never see this on a "You Tube" truck show advertisement. I also could not be happier. This is a great site for sharing and remedying problems we have. At 75 and pretty set in my ways it's fun listening to others solutions to problems...I wish i understood more on the computer electronics we have on our trucks to get it to tell me more when driving and towing. The info is there, it's just getting it displayed.. I also wish i knew what Forscan really was and how to use it.....

That's why I ended up messing with mine and cutting it down. At full length it sounded a little too quiet, so then I cut it down to 2 spirals, then just one- and that felt like the perfect compromise between having some sound but also cutting drone and keeping my wife/neighbors from wanting to kill me in the morning when I warmed up the truck.

Thanks for the idea of modding it. I ended up being unhappy with how quiet and muffled it sounded so I modded my auger. Ended up with 1 spiral with a few 1/4” drill holes in it, sounds great now. I’ll see how that plays out, but pretty sure i’m done, maybe!
Big change for my truck getting here Monday, Raptor wheel and tires (brand new take offs), stoked!
