Hey guys, i have a 94 e350 with a 5.8—180000 miles—-
changed the oil and used 5w30 synthetic (i know)
was driving to an emergency one night and turned off the interstate and floored it to get up ti cruising speed 75 mph
tunes cranked up and heard addition percussion(NOT) motor was ticking and bery low oil pressure
back off the accelerator to 45 mph and pressure came up a little
drove 6 miles, parked it for n hr - checked oil fine—-started it, had pressure drove 35 miles home at 55 mph—-any faster and i would lose pressure
days later installed a mechanical gauge on it, pulled dizzy and used a drill to see if i could create pressure, it pressurized to 50 lbs with the drill in reverse.
Detonation is preignition or pinging which usually only happens under load. If it is making the noise all the time then something in the valvetrain isn't right, could be a bent pushrod or maybe a lifter has failed, you won't know until it's opened up.
Conanski, my buddy who is a mechanic/ chevy guy suspects a bad distributor, (not spinning the oil pump) we pulled the distributer and inspected it, looks fine to me—- but then he is a chevy guy—
I was thinking a plugged oil screen, but since i have 50 lbs oil pressure with the drill maybe i just should quit thinking! Lol
Stethoscope the valve covers, if no stethoscope or don’t want to buy pvc pipe can be used but not as good.
Once identified what side clacking is coming from pull valve cover, put each cylinder to Tdc and shimmy rockers for excessive play.
sounds like you might have a sticking lifter or valve and possible obstruction in oil passage. I’d confirm the valvetrain first and throw in a oil cleaner see if that fixes obstruction, maybe switch to synthetic if you’re using Dino oil and plan to keep it a while.

While rotating the oil pump mechanically, clockwise and ccw , we must have loosened up buildup on the pickup screen, have oil pressure now/—added 2- pints of seafoam and let idle for 30 minutes, changed oil and filter, all good now, might add more seafoam and change oil in a week—
