My 1997 E150 Ford Waldoch conversation van with 514,137 miles sheared the gear select actuator shaft today. What steering columns are compatible for either complete swap or obtain pieces parts to repair?
I swapped out a late 90's F-Series with tilt wheel into my 2000 E250---apart from a few bolted on brackets or mounts these should be 100% compatible. If you grab one from a DIY scrap yard take the lower u-joint with the column. Be aware you'll swap out the Multifunction Switch and simply transfer the E-Series wiring harnesses inside the column into the "new" column.
If you go this route its a good time to replace the shifting tube bushings and generally make sure the replacement column is in top condition before installing it. Having done this I took photos and posted them here: E-Series Column Photos There might be something there that'll be helpful. Be advised at the bottom of the column is a bracket the transmission shift cable attaches---you want to transfer the E-Series part onto the "new" column.
All in all this is an easy job--make sure you set the parking brake AND chock the wheels---don't ask me why I suggest this!
