Please forgive me if there is already a thread on this topic but I can't find one. I have a 95 f150 4x4 with auto locking hubs. The problem im having is when I kick it in 4 wheel drive, I go forward and it jumps the front end up with a loud clunk and what sounds like something dropping or snapping, same thing happens when switching directions (forward to reverse). It sounds decent when driving forward after the clunk but whenever I turn a smaller clunk occurs. Is this common or should I be concerned about something? I am new to 4 wheel drive so please help!
Thank you
4x4 is for soft or slippery surfaces only. Running in 4x4 on pavement will produce the clunking you describe.
Don't run it on wet pavement either.
Ratios can be slightly different front to rear and wheel speed is always different when turning. In 4x4 the axles are locked together and the driveline "winds up". Clunking, chirping and broken parts follow.
Yes I belive I have gotten it figured out. I bought the truck in July and it came with a lift and I found the lift kit brackets werent torqued down correctly. I havent tried the 4x4 yet but im hoping torquing them down will fix both the problems!

loose suspension parts will definitely do it!!!
hopefully the loose bolts did not wallow out any holes.
