Water Heater Options

I've managed to get everything working in the '95 Lance 3000 camper working, except for the water heater.
It had a Suburban 6 gallon water heater, but I couldn't get anything apart to even check it over, so I removed it.
I've been unsuccessful in finding a used replacement. I'm in the Sacramento area.
A new one costs upwards of $300, while a tankless water heater is about half that.
We rarely camp where there are hookups, preferring boon-docking instead.
I've been reading about the differences, but almost all discussions are for full-timers on hookups.
Thoughts on the differences between the types of water heaters for use in a slide-in camper?

Those small tankless heaters are ridiculously high amp draw making them impractical for truck campers. Models like the Truma are only available when installed new by manufacturers according to website.

What was not working on the one you took out. There is not much to them.

Let it be known I am a MAJOR Tankless fan, in fact have now owned a tank unit since about 2001...BUT: My tankless units have been powered by Natural gas and propane (from a 350 gal tank) and never an issue of any kind, major savings over tank units but I would not consider one for a RV of any type.

Stay with the DSI units it's a better way to RV.
