LPOP life expectancy? Post your experience.

I'm getting ready to replace my water pump. The current pump has something akin to 150,000+ miles on it, as did the OEM unit it replaced, and is a rebuilt unit from Advance Auto which I installed some 9-10 years ago. It's had a good life, but is oozing from the weep hole, so I'll replace it proactively before it fails catastrophically on some narrow county road with no shoulder between my house and the plant.

Here's my question for the poll.

The truck now has almost 310,000 miles on it, and I'm going to be all the way in to the front cover while doing this work, and I'm wondering about the LPOP. Is there some "rule of thumb" or "typical" point of failure for our stock LPOP's? 200,000 miles, 300,000 miles, 400,000 miles, etc.?

For those of you who have replaced your LPOP, at what mileage did you do so?

Even for those who have NEVER replaced the LPOP, let me know what mileage point you are currently at as well so I can get a more complete perspective on LPOP life expectancy.

If you are not experiencing any problems I would forget about looking at it. What's going to happen is you are going to remove the low pressure oil pump and see the condition of the front cover and wish you hadn't. Then you will be replacing a front cover just because you are now aware that it "looks bad"........

So, what are the symptoms of a weak, tired, or failing LPOP?

I've just never seen much discussion about them here in FTE, and I know that by itself tells part of the story.

Mine was still good at 400k when the truck was part of the fleet, but got replaced duue to a complete engine reseal.
IMO the seals will go out before the oil pump goes out.
Yet when I rebuild my engine at somewhere at 5-7k after my engine rebuild my LPOP wore out badly just from one side, installed a high volume lpop problem fixed. And the pump was the OEM pump the master engine rebuild that Clay sells, not some China knock off junk.

400k on motor with original pump. Front cover was excellent. 35psi at idle. 50 above idle. Delvac 1 & Shell T6 80% of its life.

Did a motor make over at 350k.
Bought a new OEM & Melling, both were so poorly machined along with nicks and burrs everywhere.
I have the resources to measure and inspect aerospace parts. Returned both.

This one still made pressure and never had any side effects.

Mine had the original LPOP in it at 338,586 miles. Blew a hole in piston #3 at that point and Swamps rebuilt the engine with a Melling LPOP.

I replaced mine at 173,000 with a Melling only due to the original seal leaking badly leaving oil puddles in my garage. Replaced it and no more front cover leaks. But a word of caution. When one pulls on a little string a lot more of the sweater will start to unravel, and I’m the kind of guy who doesn’t know when to stop pulling. So a new Fluid Damper harmonic balancer went in $$$, all radiators went out to be pressure tested, and an upgraded 05-07 front end with new headlights went on $$$$.

Pete, I believe the failing signs are just failed oil pressure. I am not sure that they give any warning. That being said, I only replaced one LPOP in my last OBS because I was in there and the truck was in such poor shape from lack of maintenance that I just threw one in. The old one came out without a nick. Knowing what I know now, I would have left it alone. If it were me on your truck, I'd leave it alone. Hope this helps. Also, if you did have to replace later, removing and replacing isn't that big of a deal other than pulling the crankshaft pulley to get the LPOP cover off.

My 2000 has 326’xxx on it all original, plenty of cold starts up here in Mn, don’t know if that would have any effects on longevity.
I ran Rotella 10-30 for a good portion of its life now on Rotella T6 5-40.
