Replacing OEM Fuel filter setup

I have heard the stories on the OEM water/fuel filter setup on the 7.3 IDI and presently am nearing the stage of installing a 7.3 IDI rebuild. Given that I have everything out of the engine bay and the trans is out as well. Opportunity calls to look into replacing the OEM fuel filter system. This would also include replacing the lift pump with an electric pump. Additionally would like an electric fuel pump that provides a cover to the opening on the block when replacing the mechanical lift pump. Who has the best replacement system? Keeping the OEM fuel tanks and fuel sender setup looking to install fuel filter and electric fuel pump after fuel tank selector valve. Any and all referrals or suggestions welcome

the OEM Mechanical Lift pump is fine as long as it delivers the 1 or 2 psi needed by the injection pump... the Transfer pump does all the work .. I don't understand why folks want to put an electric pump on these engines unless the Injection pump is weak, Just add another electrical thing to go wrong... it is not needed.......

a pre Filter is always a good Idea and the Primary can be and Absolute 10 Micron and you are good to go....

my Carter rebuildable Mechanical has worked fine for 20 years now and I can't say that for electrical pumps. BUT do as you wish

I don't have a Part number handy but it's like the M60389 with the prime lever but doesn't have the vacuum line connection ... contact Carter direct that is what I did years ago... I'm sure they probably still make em.. ...the rebuild kit is the same ... I have one but have never had to use it. <<== the Rebuild kit

the point I'm trying to make is all you need is 1 or 2 PSI of positive pressure to the injection pump more than that is a waste.... and you want to keep anything larger than 10 Micron from going into the Injection Pump.... OEM specs 12 micron Stanadyne says 10.

That is not a "Rebuildable" Pump but none the less is a good replacement that will serve you well.... unless you are trying to go High performance and have a bunch of modifications to your engine that require higher Fuel pressure and volume you just really don't need the extra from an electric pump.... it's Pointless

Gone are the days where every mechanical pump was rebuildable, next time I need a replacement I'll give Carter a call. Thanks for the tip. If you find the part # please post. These past few years I haven't had the best luck out of these 30$ auto parts store pumps that probably come from the same run down factory in China.

I've noticed lately even Napa has gone horribly downhill in parts quality. I buy some stuff locally at O'Reilly stricktly because if it's a high wear part I want the lifetime warranty.

If a person needed more flow I imagine a 460 aftermarket high volume pump with an arm swap would set you up nicely. This was always my idea if I ever get the dough for a bigger pump.

The only benefit I see to the electric is priming, but a good mechanical pump and a tight fuel system primes up really quick too. If you do go electric buy a facet brand. The duralift model is highly recommended around here.

I went with the Facet electric pump. And have never looked back. It virtually eliminates any air intrusion issues. I use the one they put on reefer units can lift up to 12 feet but only runs about 3-4 psi. Blocked off the mechanical.
