This truck for the past few months has been baffling me. I recently replaced the transmission on it and the next day took it to work over 2 hours away. Upon driving it home the oil pressure suddenly dropped and the ECM shut the engine down. From then on for a while it would get to operating temperature then the pressure would drop after id say about 10 minutes. When we hooked it up to a live gauge it read 5-10 PSI so possibly bearing, internal at least. The baffling bit here is recent, it is running normal, even with a lighter oil in it (5W-20), I took it out the other day and it ran perfectly fine, drove to the next town over (30 minutes) and no pressure issues there and back.
I do plan to change the bearings regardless as those with the high mileage of this engine are probably due for replacing. But my question is, am I missing something? Am I completely wrong about the issue?
You my find the cause when the Pan is removed.
Cam chain tensioner non metallic material worn off has fallen into the Pan and is blocking the oil pickup screen.
The obvious here is not the engine. The PCM won't shut the engine down with low oil pressure. Having both a low oil pressure and engine shutdown is a fault in the PCM. You need to look for com errors. Have you pulled the codes and looked at mode 6 data?
