Hello All, Ive had my '89 F-150 since '90. She always been good to me, and Ive been good to her. 247,000 miles all original
But she started running rough on way home from work one day and I cannot figure it out why. Out of the blue, coming down the road she started missing a beat. Once before this happened and it was a fuel filter problem. So I replaced it but it made no difference. About 2 months ago I replaced the plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor button. And it ran fine, until now.
I cannot find a vacuum hose that is bad or broken, they look good.
It is a OBD1 system and the only codes are 11 and 67, which is system pass and neutral safety sw.
I even give in and took it to a reputable local shop, and he brought it back to me, after 3 weeks of having my truck.
It will run, but it is rough as a cobb. It sputters and misses terribly. I am worried about her, Ive had this truck for 29 years.
Can ya'll please help?
They had it for over 3 weeks, and claimed they checked the fuel system but didn't find any problem?? Exactly what area of the fuel system 'who knows'.
I have not yet done a compression check. The last time was 150-155 psi, but that's been a few years.
Allright, after more troubleshooting without any results, I might finally have something?
With the engine running, I pulled one spark plug wire off one at a time on the dist. cap.
On wires 1 thru 5 the engine would run even worse, but on No. 6 wire there was no change at all.
So, what now?
Compression check, fuel injector check??

Now is when you hope it's something like a bum spark plug.
Not bloody likely, but it mos' def. does happen once in a while. Or, a bad spark plug wire.
Could try swapping two of the wires around and see if the problem migrates to the other cylinder. Sounds like #6 cylinder is dead for some reason though. Always try the simple easy stuff first, sometimes it mimics much more serious engine derangements. This is often how unscrupulous shops keep their boat payments up. A compression check is a good plan, maybe a leakdown test etc.
Hey,
I did compression check on cyl. 6 and 3, that's all so far, I got hungry.
6 = 165 psi
3 = 181 psi
Also I could smell gas on the tip of the checker hose after unscrewing it from the cylinders.
Back in the year 2000, and with 108,000 miles the comp. checks were
6 = 159 psi
3 = 155 psi
Maybe some carbon build up over the years, 247,000 miles now.
What's ya'lls thoughts about this?
Thanks
Check inside the new distributor cap. I could have a pole broken off or burnt, cracked, ect.... Most replacement parts are junk these days. Also try a different plug wire.
Replace the plug also, or at least move it to another cylinder and see if the miss follows it.
And again I changed the plug and wire on cyl. 6
Its still the same ol crap like before, when I pull the wire off there is no change in the poor running condition on 6.
Compression is good, and when I pull out the plug it smells like gas. But I reckon that don't neccasarally mean it is the right amount of gas??
Yes sir I checked the cap.
Also, about 2 months before this here problem come along, I had done a P.M. on the engine and put on a new cap and button along with wires and plugs. It ran fine for bout 2 months until this problem came up.
