Hello. I am new here so I apologize for asking questions so early. I am having trouble with my 1990 F-250 7.3L IDI. Normally when I go to start the truck, I have to jump the terminals of the starter relay. No big deal, I can fix that later right? Well now I can not start the truck at all. When I do the solenoid thing, all it does is click-click-click, and maybe crank once. I thought it was the batteries, and that they needed a charge. However, I charged them and still have the same problem. I even had a Geico guy come out to try and jump start it. The big jump box he had didn't work, and jump starting with his van did not work either. When he used the jump box, he said that the box was "kicked off" every time we tried to start the truck. Did I mess up the electrical system somehow? What did I do?
I tried to charge the batteries again this morning. I tried the 10 amp setting and even the 40 amp boost setting. The highest the current went to was 2.3 amps. I also tried a different jump box and that didn't work either.
Do you have a multi-meter ? If not you need to buy one or your gambling on buying parts not know what is really wrong,
it's not uncommon for the relay/solenoid on the fender wall to go bad and it's an easy $20. fix
It could also be your battery /batteries have a bad cell and even though it has the volts, it doesn't have the amps to start it,
it could be your key switch or the activator rod or the actual electrical switch under the steering column
it could also be your starter solenoid or a bad starter,
taking some readings with a multimeter would really help you narrow it down,
if not go buy the fender relay and let us know what happens,

I will take some readings but I did replace the fender relay recently. The person I bought the truck from said that it could let the truck start from the ignition without doing bridging the terminals on the relay. It did not fix that issue, but I got this new issue before I had a change to fix the ignition switch.
Yes. The two large screw things. It would normally get the starter to crank but it doesn't any more. Just click-click-click-click and maybe one crank.
Ok.....
IF your batteries are good and the cables connections to the starter are good and clean then you have a bad starter.
Also Cable connections on batteries and Grounds must be good too.. before saying starter is bad....
But if all that is good then it can only be the starter. assuming the engine is not locked up.
