Though the project's shuttered for the winter, i wanna have all the junk on hand to get it on the road for the local hot rod run in august. And there's one mystery left, and that's what to do about a speedometer.
The truck's gotta pass inspection to get a title back, so it needs a speedometer. However the transmission i have in the truck is an M5R2 out of a '95 F150, which is the year they went all electronic, leaving it without a cable port. (annoyingly i have an '89 4wd transmission that didn't fit, which does have a port)
I'd like the truck to look 100% factory, or farmer's field fresh, so i'd like to have an original spedometer faceplate and not that 90's plastic garbage people flog. Though the unit behind it isn't paramount so long as it works.
I know that there's marine gps based spedometers but those are wildly expensive and probably not happy to be modified, and i'm not sure what other options there are.
This is strictly a thing to pass inspection, because a spedometer in a stock bonus built is made redundant by the question of "do you feel safe? If yes, you're not speeding". So ideally a solution as cheap as possible is the way to go, and any ideas would help.
Here's a suggestion, remove the tailstock and check to see if the speedodrive is inside. If so you can change the tailstock for a pre 91 tailstock(from 89-91 they did have the speedo port) I went through the same thing with an aod out of a 93 f150. That was they year they changed to to electronic speed in the rearend. when I pulled the tail, the drive was in there, so I bought a used tail with the hole. Problem solved.

Based on my reading/research, the later post electronic units do not have the gear behind the blank casting. I don't know for sure but it doesn't seem likely. And it seems like it would need a new tailshaft and tail housing, at which point i might as well just buy an AOD or C6 and slap it on there. Which i will end up doing anyway when this one inevitably blows up because i pulled it out of what turned out to be a sunk truck.
Well that's what I thought about the AOD too. But it was explained that it was actually cheaper for them to just change the tail cover and leave the rest as is, rather than doing a complete redesign. Also solves the inventory issues on replacement units. I thought my only option was going to be buying a $300-500 gps speedo, instead, a used tail stock for $35 solved the problem.
They have GPS speedometers and all other types of gauges. Very good quality, and lots of choices for cutomizing them to your truck. I've had them in my truck for 5+ years, and am very happy with them.
