Hi folks, hope all is well. My 1999 4X4 XL leaked a fair amount of oil from in/around the rear passenger side tire (soon after I engaged the differential to tackle some rough road). It wasn't brake fluid, so I thought it was either leaking differential oil or the hub was compromised somehow. I checked the level of differential oil and it was good, which leads me to believe
the hub needs replacing. Would a damaged wheel hub leak a substantial amount of fluid like that? I don't want to drive it any further for fear of doing more serious damage....it's making some nasty sounds.
yea, probably gear lube.. You can leak out 3-4 oz real easy and not notice it in the pumpkin hole. Look on you tube as mentioned. Your going to have to remove the differential cover and wheel, then pull the axle out on that side to replace the seal.
If you are really looking at a 1999 F150 4 x 4 there is no "hub" in the rear. There is an axle shaft on each side and the wheel bolt flange ( 5 studs) is welded to it.
