I have a 1980 F-150 and it came with what seems to be a charcoal filter. It has a hose that runs from carb area and the filter was disconnected and was bolted under the battery area behind the radiator....the plastic belly of it was filled with lil black stones I am almost positive were charcoal
the truck has a cat converter also......
was this infact a charcoal filter?
what exactly does it do for the truck??
and is it worth re installing on the truck???
The charcoal cannister is part of the evaporative emissions system. Vapor from the fuel tank is absorbed by the charcoal media. When the engine is started, a small solenoid in the line (CANP or cannister purge solenoid) opens, and the vapor is purged into the intake manifold.
I would reinstall it. Without it, it's very likely releasing hydrocarbon's into the environment that could better be used to power your truck. Having it hooked up correctly should not penalize the power of the vehicle.
