I started on my V-10 spark plug change today. Plug 10 was the one I wanted to start with but couldn't get my socket on the spark plug. Realized I needed a 9/16" instead of a 5/8" spark plug socket so went and got one. Came back and it wouldn't fit onto socket. Hmm. So, I took plug #6 off up front and noticed the pick below. Though I blew out the area near the plugs there was still a lot of dirt. A rock had fallen into 1 so I assumed #10 also had dirt. I was right...got everything really cleaned out now.
So, I got all of the boots off of 6-10 but couldn't get a plug to move. I am currently soaking them over night in PB Blaster hoping it will help me get the plugs free enough to pull out. Is there any tricks to getting stuck plugs? The engine is cold hasn't run all day. Pick help...took off fuel line on right bank - helped a ton to get #9 & #10. Thanks for any help.
I couldn’t find anywhere that recommended heating up the engine. I did it cold. I got that rock out but one fell on #9...see pic below. I only got the left (drivers) side done. #7 I thought was going to snap or cross thread but was able to spray with PB Blaster and work it in and out until it came out. Next week going to do the passengers side.
I've had two similar issues with debris inside the plug well preventing my socket from engaging the plug. Once it was one of the COP wiring harness connector's small silicone gasket fell off into the recess---took quite a few blasts of compressed air to dislodge it. Shortly after that second instance I bought a nice flexible borescope so I can see what if anything is hiding before beginning.
It just doesn't take much to hinder the socket from grabbing onto the plug----advice to blow out the plug wells after removing the COP is a wise move.
