Hello everyone, I need a bit of help. We have a 2012 Escape with a manual transmission. Yesterday when attempting to downshift the pedal got mushy, was able to get into gear, then shifted again and the pedal stayed all the way down and the car stalled. Put in fluid to make sure that was ok. Now seems to drive forward, but when I attempt to reverse, same thing... shift into reverse and the car cuts out while in gear and then struggle to restart shift out of gear and into first. A side note last week the power steering seemed to fail for one turn and now works fine. I was told this may be the master cylinder or slave cylinder which I guess has to drop the transmission to repair. was advised to start the car with the clutch pedal pushed in, then release without any gas applied, if the car dies the clutch is ok.... did this and the car died. Any help is appreciated.
Can you provide more details on your car? I tried looking up some service information but I can’t seem to get the right option combination for a manual trans.
As an example of what I need, my car is a 2002 Escape XLT, 3.0 engine, AWD.

I believe it is an xls... the base model. 2.5 liter, 4-cylinder, front wheel drive with a manual transmission... 2012.

How far down do you have to push the clutch pedal to get the clutch to release? The pedal isn’t going to get soft for no reason, and what you’re describing sounds like the clutch is beginning to wear out and will need replacement.
I’m not familiar with the manual transmissions on the escape but usually there is some kind of cover that can be removed to visually inspect the clutch. It will be underneath the car somewhere along the engine/transmission mating surfaces. Pull the cover and look for signs of a leaking slave cylinder and inspect the clutch disc - they look like a brake pad with lining material on both sides. If this lining is getting thin, clutch replacement is needed.
