i have the dreaded cam problem. my question is which would be best. lock the phazor and reprogram the computer? or put it back to its stock form?
i`m not sure how much fuel mileage you lose when you lock out the vvt, that may be a deal killer for me. to put it back stock parts and labor is close to 1600 bucks, that is the reason i`m asking.
well that is my normal, but i was told that the lockout was a better fix. these newfangled motors makes me wonder what ford was thinking when they drew them up.
well they have their share of problems but a lot of people treat em like a rented redheaded step mule then complain after 150 thousand hard miles when something goes wrong
Just fix it right. Lockouts don’t solve the root causes of the 5.4 issues.
As for these solely being maintenance issues, I didn’t know timing chains and tensioner seals were normal maintenance items. If so, that’s my sign to look elsewhere.

The engineers who designed this motor (or any modern motor) had/have a tall order to fill. Make plenty of horsepower and torque, but keep the emissions and fuel consumption at or under the designated Federal or State levels. Not an easy task. All kinds of timing magic is done to accomplish this feat. The biggest issue is that the average owner will not follow recommend maintenance intervals. Most folks probably think it’s okay to change the oil every 10000 miles. THIS is why there are problems with many new motors these days.
You really only need to do one thing to keep a motor running well past 200,000 miles ... CHANGE THE OIL AND FILTER REGULARLY to keep engine sludge at bay. Easy Peasy.
Fix it the motor right the first time. Phaser lockouts are a snakeoil solution at best.
^This. Lockouts are a cheap way of not replacing the cam phasers. Lockouts will require a tune that, from what I've heard many times, will rob your engine of some power and fuel economy.
