I got the flat glass for both my trucks cut at local Diamond Auto Glass shop. In 1999 I needed rear, door and vent glass for my 54. They even seated the vent glass into the frame and the door glass into the window channel lifter upper thing. In 2016 I got the 54 repainted and since both door windows were cracked I needed them replaced. I found out the Diamond Auto Glass shop had closed so I called Safelite. My call went to the national headquarters and after talking to several people and telling them I have an old vehicle they finally put me I touch with the foreman of the local shop. He said he could cut them if I brought the old glass in. Again he seated them in the window channel lifter upper thing..... What is the term for that anyhow? I picked them up a week later.
in 2018 I got my 55 painted. I needed two vent glass. He cut them and seated the vents into the frames. The vent glass was either cut too big or he could not seat it in the frame deep enough so I couldn't close the vents completely shut. I called and he told me I can put a belt sander to the edge of the glass and grind it down to size. I was doubtful but it worked on the passenger side. The driver's side was too much for me to grind down, plus it developed a crack near the top of the glass. Six months later I called him about it and he told me to bring it in. He cut the me glass to the correct size, seated it in the frame and since he was coming home he met me in my town 30 miles away... no charge!
If you call Safelite be patient until they connect you to your local store and you can talk to the shop foreman.
Slightly off topic, slightly relevant. When I was a kid dad taught me how to drill through glass by holding it underwater using an electric drill and grinding stone bit. Scared me then, I got over it. Now my wife does stained glass and I regularly sand the sharp glass edges underwater using emory paper. Now we have wet saws and grinders and oil filled glass cutting tools. Something to keep in mind when someone needs a piece of glass shorten or reshaped. Hold it underwater. And it's okay dad for almost frying your son.
