Check the Certification Label on the driver's door frame. It should be close to the striker post on the cab. Do that and post a picture of the shifter and the boys here will be able to help you out. If the shifter is curvy like an "S" then it will mostly likely be the NP435.
Didn't read them message till after I crawled under the truck. Door tag says A
Man ... 33 years of dirt and undercoating can hide anything.
Tag is broken if half but still there.
From what I can still read ...
3TA7003 VA FE3
3 86 435
So 435 it is!
Soooo ... what oil do you put in this thing?
My manual says 80W (1992 and earlier 4 speed ... 1993 and up Mercon) ... is this correct?
Transfer case say Mercon?
Rear ends say "hypoid gear lube" ..... what is this ???
At least I know the engine takes 5w30
Thanks ... Mike
Those sound right, my '85 manual is just a little bit different than yours, but generally the same. Hypoid gear lube according to google is gear oil with and EP(extreme pressure) rating. Like this one https://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produ...caAnVDEALw_wcB
I'd take a length of fuel hose, 1/4" or 5/16" and drill an undersized hole in the lid of a quart bottle of trans fluid. That way you can turn the bottle upside down and squeeze it, turn it upright to fill it full of air so when you turn it back over the air will force the fluid in. Then just swap lids between bottles. Will have to look up what the latest and greatest trans fluid is for the application.
So 80W-90 it is. I will still go with the synthetic. They say it won't do any harm ... just don't "need" that much protection. Probably the last time it will ever get changed.
One more question though ... For the transfer case they say Mercon.
OK ,,, lots of choices here! Ford (Motorcraft) has Mercon V ... and also Mercon LV (not sure what this is ... not for use in vehicles requiring Mercon V, SP or Continuous chain type) .... Some like Castrol say Dex/Merc ... some say "Multi-Vehicle" ....ATF+4 (also covers ATF+3) ......
I would like to put some kind of synthetic in it ... which do I use?
I'm not going to be able to help with that, the one from the list says not to use in transfer cases. But Mercon V is backwards compatible and yours requested it specific... so I dunno
It says transfer case oil but then says it does not meet OEM spec. (or at least does not cross reference to them ... reading the answers to questions asked).
