Fuel Level

2010 F150 Lariat Supercrew. So, my fuel level gauge quit working a few months ago and I was driving by the trip meter. The gauge sweeps when starting like it should so I figured it was the float assembly. Changed it out and it read pretty close to where it should, but it went only to 3/4 when I filled it up. Is there something I need to reset?

don’t know, but if it were me, I’d disconnect the battery for a bit to see if that resets something

might also be that it takes a few fill ups or something to fully reset.

never know, but can’t hurt

yes, give it 100 miles to match up... Don't know if it "resets" or if there is cosmoline on the brush contacts of the float switch... but I have had the same problem after new level install.

Also ran into a problem I have never seen. No matter how I turned it, the fuel tank module would not come out through the hole in the tank. It was just a little to big to come out. Could the plastic "basket" swell up? If I ever have to replace the fuel pump, I don't know what I will do. It wasn't too bad changing the fuel level/float assembly since I could get the module out enough to unsnap the old and snap in the new one.

I have used Techron fuel system cleaner often for gauge issues and it works well for cleaning the build up on the fuel gauge sensor.

If you buy a new float / sensor / or pump unit, it probably came from China... It floated over here on the boat and was exposed to possible weather conditions. They "may" put a thin coating of protectant on the level sensor winding, or maybe it is slightly corroded from setting... that's why I say it might take some time to wear it off, or the gas/ alcohol wash it off.... or maybe it just takes an hour of running to "reset"... I don't know, but I have had two trucks that would read 1/2 tank when the tank was full.. Over an hour of running, the gauge slowly climbed to the full mark. A gauge in the tank, with gas fumes, or constantly under the level should not get corroded.

After a couple of weeks, it still reads about 3/4 when filled up. I think I will live with it.
