I went and done it! I purchased an 03 6.0 Excursion. I had posted about some questions regarding it in a previous post... now I own it so, naturally, I am already having issues lol.
After buying it and driving it for a week I found a very slow oil leak that looks to be at least above the starter, maybe further up. I assume if there is oil on the starter then it cannot be the rear main or oil pan area as oil cannot defy gravity Also, I noticed a rough idle and surging at stop signs after she is up to temp. I pulled a P0278 soft code using OBD Fusion which points to #6, so I am thinking either ICP or #6 injector, or possibly both at the same time. I am getting 47.5 to 48v from FICM once it is at temp. When I first start it, it will drop to 46.5v for a millisecond every once and a while before settling out at 47.5v to 48v.
Everything I read on here and abroad is ICP sensor and a bad injector. Can the ICP malfunction throw a P0278 code? I have it at the shop now, waiting on a call tomorrow. The previous owner had all but 2 injectors changed out 2 months ago (I have documents from dealer), of course one of the 2 is #6. I am thinking the leak may be from the dealer being in there and it just happened to show after I bought it. The truck has been arp studded, oil cooler, coolant filter, egr delete, rebuilt factory trany, revmax torque converter, and diesel site hpop, all within the last 30k miles along with the 6 new injectors...
I am assuming nothing more can be done outside of the blue spring kit that I have but haven't installed yet. Is there anything else you all would recommend outside of insight on my issues? I am hoping this beast takes the place of my wife’s 17 expedition as our tow vehicle for the 600+ mile trips to FL from NC with our 6000lb center console boat and kids. I love the truck, J just hope I dont come to regret this decision... this is my first diesel.
There are actually quite a few places for oil to migrate from above the starter.
HPOP cover
Oil cooler gasket, or either sensor on the oil cooler cover.
Turbo return line, or supply line
Glow plug harness
Bed plate?
How bad is the leak? They can be a real PITA to track down on this engine, but unless it's a drip every time it's parked situation I don't think I would sweat it for now.
As for your code, my odds are on the injector itself. You would likely see a P2285 if it was the ICP
I'd be putting a coolant pressure test gauge on that pronto.
If you are in an area with falling needles or leaves, the opening in the cowl panel will allow debris to gather and promote rust in the wiper mechanism channel.

you are awesome! I have the new cowling in the garage, just arrived Friday, I also have a new air deflector for the top of the radiator, the truck is in the shop now, Im waiting on a call about the injector. When you say 58mm, are you talking a new pulley? I have noticed I am only charging at around 13.3v. Will the pulley fix that? Also, when you say oem, is there a oem type filter that will work in that box or do I need to salvage a whole air intake system? Also, any idea where to get the shield? I dont mind replacing these outside components myself... Im not going inside when I have a very trusted prior Ford diesel tech up the road that runs his own shop.
The charging voltage depends on when you are taking it. The pulley won’t address if the alternator is not up to snuff. Since you have a very trusted former Ford tech right up the street then I hope went through the truck before you bought it. If not, now is the time for him to go over every inch.
To me, I would not have touched the truck with this unless it was verified heads and gaskets were professionally gone through.
You would probably need the entire housing for the air cleaner. With parts you need, I’d hunt in a salvage yard. But I wouldn't do that until the truck is completely checked out.

The truck was checked out by a ford dealership before I bought it. They said all was fine. That stain was from the oem cap failing while the prev owner was towing in the mountains about 10k miles ago. I hope it isnt head gaskets, if it is I already have the studs so I will just have them do the job and call it a valuable lesson in trusting the Ford dealer.
I didn't think the head gaskets were a thing with this thing being studded and egr deleted. I called another mechanic this evening and he says he has never seen a p0278 with a hg failure. He also says its $3k to fix the hgs if it is the issue. It hasn't lost any coolant since I bought it.
Aaaannnnddd Im getting new head gaskets and an oil cooler. Also replacing 3 injectors if they dont test good (other 5 are new). I will start a new thread, as I have questions and am an idiot and bought the truck with this issue. Looks like I will own a $20k excursion when all this is done... Im getting oringed heads though... Im not doing this again.

Ok, I am convinced that this diagnostic thing is an art... So I decided to run the truck and monitor the EOT AND ECT Spread (forgot the term). Never gets above 5 degrees. I then decide to ho to ONE MORE mechanic who was highly recommended by another gasser mechanic in my area.
I called him, he said bring it in, he would do some tests and guarantee his diagnosis. We worked out the what ifs on the phone. He said he would diagnose it for free and if they are bad, He gets the job. I said, deal!
I took it to him and he took it into a bay. About 10 mins later he calls me back. He ran a hydrocarbon test twice, both of which were negative. He then sat there romping on here trying to get the thing to show any sign. He proceeded to tell me that my HGs were fine and that my ICP Sensor was leaking (oil leak) and that my air intake hose was cracked at the turbo.
I am getting a new ICP Sensor and air intake system from salvage if I can find one. I am taking her on a mountain trip tomorrow, I will do everything in my power to make her puke. Im guessing the PO was right and it was just a bad degas cap. Time will tell. I have an oil cooler ordered... Hopefully I never need it.
Even if he used the hydrocarbon liquid specifically for diesel, its not a reliable source. As SD said, the pressure gauge is the best means, and even that takes some diagnostic ability, burbing the baby.
Romping on the throttle in an engine bay to see if there is a head gasket compromised is telling me he is not that experienced with this 6.0 issue..
You may not have an issue, and I hope you don't, but it will be the pressure gauge telling you, or a windshield full of antifreeze.
Did you get a coolant pressure gauge set up so you can watch pressure?
Not yet, I plan to get one set up. The mechanic I spoke to this evening was adamant that he would NOT pull the heads. He even admitted that he wished it werent the case and said “I really want this head job, but if it were my truck, I wouldn't dare tear into it”.
I am purchasing a myriad of gauges/monitor system for the truck. I am also having him flash the PCM to newest stock program before I get a monitor/programmer.

Im going to run this **** out of it tomorrow. If it has a problem, hopefully it will show climbing the Blue Ridge Parkway for 3 hours.
